Projects > Emotional Labor Specialist, Climate Change Hotline

The Emotional Labor Specialist, Climate Change (ELSCC) Hotline was a month-long phone performance and installation based at NURTUREart Gallery in Brooklyn, NY. Visitors to the space were invited to call the Emotional Labour Specialist to discuss their feelings about the climate emergency. Some callers were lucky enough to speak directly with the ELSCC who helped unpack emotions around climate change, offering to take up tasks, such as conducting research, mailing apology cards, and spending time worrying on behalf of callers. Throughout the duration of the performance artist Allison Rowe was also caring for a newborn baby and as a result, many callers were also subjected to the domestic audioscape of a young infant and their needs. Many times the ELSCC was simply unable to answer the phone leaving callers on a kind of emotional hold.
